An Arctic Reminder of the Power of the Seas

Written by Claire Montanaro.

The discovery of a very large bulge of fresh water developing in the Arctic Ocean now is a reminder both of the power and importance of our seas, and the uncertainty of our climate future. It could change everything.

Scientists have found that thinning ice in the North Pole in combination with wind movement has caused this swelling to occur; it is significant because it is growing quite rapidly, forcing sea levels to rise and water temperatures to change. The loss of the ice cover could be accelerated as warmer waters rise to the surface, and the impact may be felt in seas and lands far away from the polar regions. Indeed, it could affect coastal regions in many continents including the Americas and Europe: currents that determine weather patterns could be affected, leading to much colder seasons in Europe and hotter climates in other parts of the world. The implications are profound for our changing world.

While some view this as a cause for concern, I prefer to see it as a reassurance of the power of Gaia and her world of nature, a place that we are privileged to share with her. My faith in her is unshakeable and while she guides and guards the Blue Planet I know that all will be well. She has overseen great changes to her lands and seas over time, and while man has shivered or starved from time to time, and species have come and gone, with her help nature has adapted and evolved successfully and will do so again.

Whatever changes the Arctic brings to our world, through its ice and seas and winds and currents, our beautiful planet and her wise and loving kingdom of nature will survive ever stronger. The human race can too and I believe it will, though it would help if we ceased to resist and began, truly, to see and feel with the eyes and heart of love.

Dear Claire
It was refreshing to read your blog about the power of nature. At first I thought it would be another doom and gloom cry for the preservation of our lovely planet that we hear a lot about, but it was a sensible and thoughtful recognition of planetary powers and our relative insignificance as to whether they exist or not. Of course we can change them dramatically, but they will rebound in a time frame that we really do not understand properly.
With gratitude and love, Marta

Thank you, Marta, for your comment. Yes, there is so much we do not understand, but nature always bounces back.
