Building Bridges
A bridge is a potent spiritual symbol, reminding us of life and death, of cycles, infinity, limitlessness, dimensional crossings, transition, endings and beginnings, new horizons and adventure, and journeys into the unknown. A bridge is sacred.
A bridge is movement and change: if you cross a bridge, any bridge, you are moving from one reality to another, one country to another, one time to another, and however familiar the crossing you never quite know what you will find on the far side. It may, physically, span water or a ravine but always it will have space and emptiness around it and the mystery of the road between Heaven and Earth.I have been thinking about bridges today as I prepare for an oak bridge to be built over my wildlife ponds here in my treasured Welsh wilderness. I have planned it carefully, very much with the needs of my natural world in mind but I know its purpose will be much more than utilitarian and aesthetic. It will be a spiritual crossing for those who use it, if this is what they wish it to be, a reminder of the Rainbow Bridge, the Antakharana upon which all enlightened souls walk.
The soul journey is a bridge from one level of being to another, a series of initiations which end with the Everything which is Spirit. I will remember this as I cross my ponds in days to come; I hope with all my heart I never take this or any other bridge for granted, for it will mean so much, and in so many ways.
