Boundaries and barriers

Written by Claire Montanaro.

My thoughts on boundaries yesterday provoked some interesting comments.  As someone said, boundaries may well be different for each person, and, certainly, there is nothing wrong in that!

Since there are no hard and fast rules on the subject, I wondered if it is possible to come up with a principle which could apply to most if not all such situations.  My subjective sense is that, in a healer/client relationship it is helpful to try to achieve a balance that is comfortable for both parties: if there are ground rules, let them be clear (whether spoken or unspoken) and accepted; if there are none, the same ethos applies.  We may recognise also that relationships change, just as we change, and what may have been a necessary and chosen boundary before may quietly disappear over time.

When a boundary becomes a barrier... this is when we need to pay attention.
