The Eyes of Enlightenment

Written by Claire Montanaro.

Look at a leaf with the eyes of enlightenment and see how perfectly it is made.

Look at any object any where, detach from its name and connotation and observe it without judgment in as much detail as you can. Whatever it is, whether the feather of a humming bird or an ant on cow dung, the beauty of its colouring and the delicacy of its make up will give you cause for awe.

Look now at your finger nail with the same spirit of detachment. You are being human if the first you see is the torn cuticle, the broken nail, a speck of dirt or chipped nail polish, for most people when they scrutinise a physical aspect of who they be are self-critical, seeing its faults and not its beauty.

If an angel observed your nail, what It see? It would admire the rainbow iridescence of the colour, the smoothness of the texture, the protection it gives to your finger, the curve and contrast of the half moon lunula, the shades of whiteness to the tip. The angel has no expectation of how your nail should be, and no judgment of it either. Whether bitten or damaged, cared for or neglected, all the angel would see was beauty and that it was part of you, beautiful too.

Look at your world with the loving eye of the angel and see the perfection in all that is. To a butterfly on a buddleia growing in a derelict station wall, life is heavenly, as it is for the buddleia also, though most onlookers travelling through see only neglect and weeds not the colourful abundance of nature: they miss so much, and you do too, perhaps?

See yourself as the angel sees you, every part and piece of you. Nothing is wrong, nothing can be improved, all is well. That is the secret of enlightenment. Use it.
