Spiritual Development Explored

Written by Claire Montanaro.

Spiritual development comes in many forms, but overall is constant. It is infinite too, and unique to each being.

In my work as a spiritual teacher I am seeing feelings of guilt in many of those who come to me. Every one is an evolving soul, and it is ironic that for some whose journey is advanced there is a sense of expectation, duty, about how they should be as a human and self-reproach if they fail to maintain a regular spiritual practice or fall below the standards they have set for themselves as someone who aspires to be “spiritual”.

This sense of failure results in self-judgment and inhibits their limitless potential for joy in being human – and it is the capacity to feel joy which is their gift from Spirit, joy in themselves, in their lives and their future – and the gift, of course, is available to us all. Joy comes when the pulse of the soul beats in harmony with the personality and the higher realms and while we may not know where this feeling comes from, we know it when it is there as something special and that makes life worthwhile. It makes the heart sing.

Joy comes when we cast aside expectation and judgment and are able to accept that whatever we find ourselves doing, in any moment, is fine and for a reason, always to help our growth and others too. It applies if we are fighting a war, teaching yoga, cleaning chimneys, painting, or attending a spiritual development workshop. If we are doing our best in whatever circumstances we find ourselves, we are being spiritual, and nothing else matters.

Spiritual guilt often derives from past life memory or by comparing ourselves to others negatively. It is never, ever justified. So, if you are one of those who feels you should be meditating more often, doing good works, being a nicer person, then know you have full permission from Spirit to continue living your life as you have chosen it to be in the knowledge that you are following your path perfectly and that human experience is the key to your future.

There is no expectation of you from God, only total love for who you are.

Dear Claire
As the new energies roll on quite strongly this month, I am getting, not just to abandon the ‘shoulds’, but any preconceptions whatsoever about what spiritual service and role is… It is as if the new energies require totally new ways of thinking and being. What used to work, no longer does! So, no wonder some of us experience the void, the limbo. Even spiritual routines can be an attachment and I feel almost like re-inventing myself, day by day, totally open and under the guidance of Spirit. On a collective level also: I see people talking on TV and wonder how futile it is, trying to cope with what is to come, using the old ways… It just won’t work, we have to go to a whole new level… On the collective, as on the individual, discover new ways of thinking and being, totally under the guidance of Spirit … With love, Victoria
