Optimism for the Future
Two pieces of news have caused me my usual state of optimism for our future to be further strengthened today. One is factual, one is predicted, both are likely to be true.
Firstly, scientists drilling in Newcastle have found large quantities of geothermal energy which will be a carbon-free and cheap way of heating parts, at least, of the city and beyond. Many other parts of the UK have similar supplies of green energy available from under the ground, as is being discovered in many other parts of the world. This form of drilling through boreholes is comparatively minimalist in its environmental impact, and could be a wonderful way of empowering area of high population in particular all over the planet. Some countries are developing and using this technology very well, but a lot more could be done by way of investment and research, and hopefully it will.Secondly and quite differently, luxury lifestyle experts are reporting that "the traditions of old luxury - the luxury of things - are awfully dull for new consumers. They want to be touched emotionally by their experiences, and there are new priorities, such as ethical concerns and sustainability” (Lucia Van Der Post). Another way of expressing this sentiment is to say that altruism with inner peace is the new cool. Wouldn’t it be lovely if the new and lasting must-have is the essence of Spirit?
