Calming the Fears

Written by Claire Montanaro.

The events in Japan, New Zealand, the Arab world and elsewhere have created a feeling of uncertainty and edginess in many observers of these great occurrences.

Memories have been stirred of Chernobyl, Hiroshima, Nagasaki, and complacency about the safety of our nuclear processes has been shaken. It is ironic that it was the use of the nuclear option on Japan which ended the last world war, and once again it is that country which reminds us of the need for vigilance, transparency and questioning of the use of volatile and potentially dangerous materials.

I wonder how much we humans have learned about the value of working with the gifts of nature rather than working with what is un-natural? We had the opportunity in 1945, when humanity witnessed the horrors of nuclear attack and vowed it would never happen again: we have had sixty six years……..and the developed world is more dependent on nuclear energy than ever before. Whether it is used in war or for peaceful reasons, it is all about power and as in all things, when power is mis-used it can be devastating.

The Japanese tragedy we are witnessing is a gift for which we should be grateful, while we grieve and empathise also. There is more yet to unfold, but already national governments and experts are realising the implications for their counties and it may be that from this sequence of crises change will come that ultimately will help us to live in co-operation with the planet, benefiting from her free natural resources as we have done for millennia.

Meanwhile, if you are feeling a little anxious or fearful without knowing quite why, put it down to old remembering. Atlantis fell through misuse of power, necessarily so, but man and spirit lived on. Our world has shaken much in recent months, but what comes from it will be seen, in time, to be very wonderful. Please accept it for what it is, with discernment and without fear if you can.

Dear Claire
It does seem that the world is experiencing shock after shock from so many different quarters and once again your words are very reassuring. The need to keep trusting events to lead to a better planet for all beings and envisioning how it can be (and is already on a level), is even more necessary now to counteract the uncertainty and challenging aspects of these current and future events.

A partial or complete meltdown of a nuclear reactor is frightening to everyone but it must be especially difficult for the Japanese people with their national memory of the devastating radioactive fallout at the end of the Second World War. It may be that their second nuclear disaster will prompt policy makers and the public to question the creation of atomic energy: it has become increasingly seen as a cleaner alternative to dirtier natural resources like oil and coal and the elimination of reliance on imports from other countries. It may be that attention is turned back to these natural resources. However, "harvesting' these natural resources can produce many humanitarian and environmental damages as was seen in the Gulf Coast and Alaska and continues to be experienced in many other regions like Nigeria on a daily basis.

So once again, attention needs to be focussed on wasteful uses of fuel and the production of cleaner natural resources. Exerting pressure on governments for better public transportation for people and goods, and tax breaks to encourage manufacturers and users to produce and to use, less fuel guzzling cars and alternative fuel methods, needs to continue. So much can be done through education and involvement in this process. This can be seen in Denmark's shining example where individual households are generating their own energy so efficiently that they are selling it back to the national grid!

In these times of uncertainty and overwhelming events, both natural and human, we can still influence their outcome on many different levels. This is the time to stay strong and inspiring with our vision for a better way of being, our knowledge, wisdom, compassion and our creative love. This is why we are here right now.

With many thanks and much love
Marta
