Observing the Symbolism in our Lives

Written by Claire Montanaro.

We are snowbound, and this morning I walked into the village to get some milk and eggs (pics of the scenery on Facebook!).

On my way to the only shop in the area, I bumped into a friend who has, it seems, been experiencing, in the space of a few days, a series of problems ranging from an erratic heating system, door locks that stopped working to, sadly a serious health issue in a member of her family.  With much on her mind she was bemused as to why so many difficulties were being thrown her way, and was trying to work out the symbolism of it all.

I suggested to her that she keeps her situation as simple as possible, to deal with the practical issues pragmatically and then when she had done what she could, to let them go, forgetting about them as much as she could to enable her to have the time, space and freedom to focus on herself, her own healing and that of her family.

It is not always easy to distinguish between signs and messages from Spirit which warrant consideration as to their meaning for us, and everyday occurrences which are there for experience, learning, testing and moving on. Some events are life-changing in their significance, some are hardly worth remembering though our mental chatterbox may try to perpetuate them as a means of distraction and control.

I find it helpful to try and observe everything and, while so-doing, to notice  the responses in my heart and in my mind. If the latter starts prattling away with what-ifs, whys, perhaps, I should, remember when, and so on, I know it will serve me to put it aside; if my heart stirs at something that I see or hear, I know I must pay attention. My thoughts are not facts, not truth, not me. My heart, however, is.

Dear Claire
Thank you for your good advice. It is always helpful to be reminded that the cessation of thoughts that go round and round in our minds, that endless chatter that distracts me constantly, is something to work towards in order to connect with what is truly important in our lives. However, there are some thoughts (I think!), that are 'me'. In those rare moments when my mind is expansive and seemingly empty, though it most probably never really is, cosmic thoughts enter and an awareness of another way of being becomes truly apparent. Perhaps this is in collaboration with my heart; a sort of knowing which combines mind and heart.

The heart is my loadstar but the mind, is capable of limitless knowledge and understanding too. I sometimes reflect upon all the great thinkers we have had throughout history who have had a glimpse of a 'greater' reality, albeit from their perspective, and then were able to use their minds to explain that experience and knowledge to the rest of us, and am truly grateful and humbled.

With love and gratitude
Marta
