The Nature of Happiness
The Duchess of Devonshire is 90, and has witnessed much from her unconventional Mitford childhood to running one of the greatest country houses, Chatsworth, for more than 60 years.
Quite by chance I heard her talking on the radio yesterday, a most intelligent, wise, witty and interesting person. At one point in the interview she was asked what made her happy. She replied that while she had experienced moments of happiness in her life, she believed being content was far more important. It was a constant in her life and a gift to have, whereas happiness was transitory.
I agree with her. For me, bliss is contentment at the deepest level; it is peace of mind and heart. The Duchess spoke of her contentment coming from being in the place that she loved and in which she lived. While I am sure it was true, I believe also that it came from her being at peace with herself and accepting herself totally, and also able to see life with detachment, humour, and compassion.
Contentment is a good word, and one which applies to all living creatures not just humans. It is something that just is.
