Community-mindedness

Written by Claire Montanaro.

Community-mindedness is an essential part of being spiritual in this new cycle under way.  Unfortunately, humanity has been a bit slow in understanding this important precept, and when we fail to grasp the message, or to do something about it, then sometimes it confronts us in painful ways.

What, do you think, is an effective way to encourage people to be in their community? One way is to prevent them leaving it - and I mean this literally.  As petrol prices continue to rise, it may be that car journeys will be affordable for essential purposes only.  The result will be that the local community will once again be the hub of life, affecting our shopping, suppliers (including farmers)  and entertainment.

Such a change of approach is beginning to be seen now, particularly in towns and cities where people are choosing to walk or cyle much more.  It would not surprise me, however, if petrol price volatility creates a situation whereby problems become apparent on a large scale, even affecting the supply of food.  If this occurs, then it may force us to abandon the "just in time" national and international delivery system we have depended on for decades in favour of a more local system once again.

It may happen sooner than you think.  Perhaps even this year.
